Phosphorus (Boericke Materia Medica)

Phosphorus irritates, inflames, and degenerates mucous membranes; inflames serous membranes; affects the spinal cord and nerves causing paralysis; and destroys bone (notably the lower jaw and tibia). It disorganizes the blood, leading to fatty degeneration of vessels and multiple tissues and organs, giving rise to haemorrhages and haemogenous jaundice.

It produces a picture of destructive metabolism, including yellow atrophy of the liver and sub-acute hepatitis. It is frequently indicated in tall, slender, narrow-chested persons with thin, transparent skin, weakened by loss of fluids, with great nervous debility and high sensitivity to light, sound, odors, touch, electrical changes, and thunderstorms. Symptoms are often sudden, with sudden prostration, faintness, sweats, and shooting pains. Pathological states calling for Phosphorus include polycythemia, blood extravasations, fatty degenerations, cirrhosis, caries, muscular pseudo-hypertrophy, neuritis, inflammation of the respiratory tract, paralytic symptoms, and ill effects of iodine and excessive salt. Worse when lying on the left side. Also referenced in tertiary syphilis (skin lesions) and nervous debility, scurvy, osteomyelitis, and bone fragility.
