He observed that body loses its natural resistance to diseases and become easy prey to any infection or from of illness due to distress in mind such as fear, worry, over anxiety, importance which depleted the vitality of an individual.
Between 1930 and 1936 he devoted his whole time to the search for harmless remedies amongst the wild flowers of countryside. Bach Flower Remedy: Descriptive Materia Medica
Dr. Bath writes about this remedy: "It is the one for that terrible, that appalling mental despair when it seems the very soul itself is suffering destruction. The hopeless despair of those who feel they have reached the limit of their endurance."
This is extreme mental torture when the mind at last comes to the point when it feels it can bear no more, that there is nothing left to hold on to, that there is a void, as it were both behind and before. Both mind and body are so exhausted, there is nothing to hope for and loneliness is complete. As someone. wrote: "I think I know (though not very brave physically) what it means to be driven out into a world where sight was not seeing and sound was not hearing, and the closest person was millions of miles away, even death could not come to one's aid."
These people are brave, strong characters and would not commit suicide which is the fear of the Cherry Plum type and they normally have full control over their emotions and keep their distress to themselves. The mental torture is far greater than that experienced by the Agrimony people who also keep their worries hidden from others. It is far deeper hopelessness than that suffered by the Gorse type, for the Sweet Chestnut suffering is so intense that it seems beyond human bearing and those experiencing this terrible despair feel they will crack even against their will or intention. One patient wrote, after many years of very great difficulties and mental suffering " I feel I have come to the end of everything. I feel I am no longer worthy even to pray, the future is complete darkness. I have no hope, no peace, I am in a complete void, so alone."
The positive aspect is seen in those who, even when their anguish is so great as to seem unbearable, can call to their Father for help and put their full trust in him, then, as Dr. Bach also said, "the cry for help is heard and it is the moment when miracles are done." Those who have experienced this form of suffering have the understanding to help all others in despair.
Bach Flower, Cases treated:
Mr. Vaidyanathan. aged 77, had a very difficult life for 40 years, full of disappointments, shocks and sorrows, which he bore with fortitude. But when his wife died in June, he felt he could no longer stand up to life, he felt he had reached the limit of his endurance, and was desperate, depressed, hopeless, lonely, and had nothing left to hold on.
Physically he was in fairly good health, but had suffered from constipation for about 60 years, having to take an aperient every night.
For the unbearable depression and lack of all hope, Sweet Chestnut was prescribed, and his report after a bottle of this medicine was encouraging. "The depression is lifting, I am grateful to say. I see daylight ahead and my faith is returning." The remedy was repeated and in another two months he wrote: "The hopeless depression has quite gone and the constipation improved beyond measure. I have gained a really wonderful peace of mind."
