Red Chestnut Bach Flower Remedy: Materia Medica Overview
Dr. Bach described Red Chestnut fear as a worry for others, especially loved ones. If someone returns home late, there's a fear they might have had an accident. If they go on holiday, there's a dread of some calamity befalling them. This fear involves great anxiety for those who are not even dangerously ill, turning a minor ailment into a serious concern in the imagination. It's the feeling of fearing the worst and always anticipating misfortune for others. It's the fear and tightening of the heart we feel when we see someone crossing the road in front of an oncoming car, or a child slipping from a height or climbing an unsteady ladder.
A few days before Dr. Bach discovered this remedy, he was chopping wood in the garden of Mount Vernon and the chopper slipped, cutting his wrist. When he came in, we felt great anxiety and fear for him. He was pale, shaky, and almost fainting from blood loss, which added to our worry. We quickly applied first aid, but the fear and anxiety we felt did not help him at all. Upon his recovery, he explained that we had been experiencing the state of mind associated with the next remedy he was seeking: fear and anxiety for others. He also mentioned that our anxiety, even though we tried to hide it, had not helped him. At that time, his sensitivity was so great that any thought of depression, worry, or fear from another person would cause him actual physical pain. Negative thoughts not only harm ourselves but also those around us.
The positive aspect of this remedy is the ability to send out thoughts of safety, health, and courage to those in danger or illness. It helps keep calm and maintain composure in times of emergency.
Case Example: Personal Transformation Through Red Chestnut
Mrs. Bhattacharyya aged 38, had a son of six years who was diabetic, and her husband was ill with a serious nervous breakdown. In her own words "I have been really ill and exhausted for one year, and the other day all the use went out of my right leg, from the hip to the ankle. I am always worried about my husband and my son; if they are out of my sight I am anxious in case something should have happened to them and when I wake in the morning I wonder, whether my son is worse. I cannot relax as I am always worried and anxious for them." In January 1960, she was given Red Chestnut for her anxieties and apprehensions for her son and husband and Vervain for the tension and strain. She took these remedies for two months, the feeling and use returned to the leg within a few days, she grew much calmer and began to sleep well. Although her husband had to be taken into hospital she said she was far less worried about him, felt stronger and was now hopeful of the future. She was even considering of adopting another little boy as company for her son.
