Holly Bach Flower Remedy: Materia Medica Overview
Holly is one of the most important remedies because hatred is the root cause of many of our difficulties. It stands in opposition to the greatest quality of all: impersonal love. When we truly love, we find it impossible to feel afraid, jealous, intolerant, worried, or depressed.
Hatred and a lack of love create feelings of separateness, insecurity, and the need to fight for what we believe is ours. This leads to envy of others, jealousy of their success, suspicion, misunderstandings, anger, and bad temper. These feelings have no real cause and only lead to unhappiness and suffering, both physically and mentally. However, they can fade away once we realize the unity of all things. As Dr. Bach wrote, "Holly protects us from the desire for everything that is not Universal Love." This insecurity and sense of separateness can make children jealous of a new baby or a more successful sibling.
Dr. Bach also wrote about Holly and another basic remedy, Wild Oat: "If ever a case suggests that it needs many remedies, or if ever a case does not respond to other treatment, give either Holly or Wild Oat, and then it will be obvious which other remedies will be required. In all cases when the patient is of the active, intense type, give Holly. In patients who are of the weak, anemic, despondent type, give Wild Oat."
The positive aspect of Holly is seen in those who can give without expecting anything in return. They can be loving, tolerant, and happy, even if they have lost everything and others have taken their rightful place. They are able to rejoice in the success of others and bear life's vexations with understanding and tolerance
Case Example: Personal Transformation Through Holly
Advaith, four and a half years old, had severe attacks of asthma since the age of two; these were prolonged and distressing. When first treated he was just out of hospital after a particularly bad attack. His trouble began when his twin brother and sister were born. He had Asian influenza, dysentery for three months, then asthma.
"It was a terrific shock to him when the twins were born," said his mother. "He was very jealous of them, threw things at them, and smacked them. If he does not get his own way now, it seems he is able to bring on an attack of asthma." He is a sturdy fearless child, who appears in the picture of health and bullies the twins. But he was really very nervous, panicked if the garden door was shut on him, frightened when the attack of asthma came on so that his mother had to sit and hold his hand and sing to him.
In October 2009, Holly was prescribed for his jealousy of the twins, Star of Bethlehem for the shock he sustained when they were born, and Rock Rose for fears. No report was received until the following near, when in December 1960, his mother wrote to say "I am highly delighted with the medicine and the relief it brought Advaith. He had improved tremendously and had no attack of asthma had enough to warrant going into the hospital since I last wrote to you. In fact, during the summer months, he was completely clear. He started nursery school last January and he loves it.
Now he is very congested and has prolonged coughing spells at night. Would you please send a further supply of the medicine, I have not found anything to touch it. He plays happily with the twins now and seems to have overcome his jealousy of them." The same prescription was sent and we hope to have a good report in due course. It would have been better if this child could have continued regularly with the remedies as he was responding so well. Regular treatment would most likely have prevented any return of the condition. Unfortunately, his mother lost our address, finding it only recently.
