Clematis Bach Flower Remedy: Descriptive Materia Medica
Dr. Bach said that the following symptoms were common, in varying degrees, in all Clematis types; a vacant far-away look; indifference; inattentiveness; preoccupation; dreaminess, and often marked pallor.
People with the Clematis temperament are daydreamers, absent-minded, and live more in their thoughts than in their actions. They lack concentration, for their interest in the present, and often their life is lukewarm. They tend to avoid difficulties or unpleasantness by letting their attention wander and withdrawing into a dream world. As a patient remarked "I withdraw into a world of my own when there is anything unpleasant to face up to. I do it automatically now." As they have little interest in life, they tend to make little or no effort to get well when they are ill. It may be because they wish to join a loved one who is dead or life does not come up to their expectations ("a polite form of suicide"-Edward Bath). They would rather die with a loved one than suffer separation (suicide pacts).
Unlike those with Agrimony temperament, the Clematis type does not welcome company. He prefers to be alone with his thoughts, and he is the opposite of the Vervain people who are full of interest and enthusiasm, for he is listless, apathetic, and inattentive. His memory is poor, for he does not trouble himself to listen or remember and his thoughts are far away. He may even "cut" you in the street for he is too occupied with his own thoughts. This withdrawing of attention may affect the eyes and ears, tor he is using those senses for inward seeing and hearing only. This lack of attention May also is the cause of accidents in the street and elsewhere.
The Clematis type needs much sleep; he is difficult to rouse enjoys dozing and can fall asleep at any time. He will say,” I fall asleep while answering questions or talking and in Church or at lectures". He is the mediumistic type, which in its negative form, is unpractical and can be influenced for ill. Fainting, faintness and giddiness, unconsciousness come and all indicate a temporary lack of interest in the present.
The Clematis state may occur in all of us at times when the mind is so occupied with its inner problems. Joys or worries that for the time being, our attention is withdrawn from the present. Clematis brings us "down to earth" once more.
The positive aspect of this remedy is found in those who have a lively interest in all things, and a sensitive mind receptive to inspiration. Among them are the practical idealists, the inspired statesmen, writer, artist, and healer, the one who is master of their daily life because he glimpses great purpose behind them.
