About Boerhaavia Diffusa Mother Tincture (Q) – Homeopathic Diuretic for Edema, Liver Cirrhosis & Kidney Support
Common Names: English: Red Spiderling, Wine Flower, Spreading Hogweed | Hindi: Punarnava, Gadahpurna | Malayalam: Thazhuthama | Tamil: Mukaratee-Kirei
Boerhaavia Diffusa (Punarnava) Mother Tincture is extracted from the flowering plant Four O’clock. Known for its strong anti-inflammatory, diuretic, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer properties, this remedy supports multiple organ systems. It helps reduce fluid retention, supports liver and kidney health, and protects tissues from oxidative stress. Research shows Punarnava may also help regulate blood sugar and reduce abnormal cell proliferation.
It is indicated in conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, urinary retention, dropsy (edema), jaundice, liver disorders, anemia, ascites, stomach complaints, and inflammatory conditions. Traditional usage also includes benefit in gonorrhoea, chronic peritonitis, skin conditions, impaired vision (night blindness), and venomous bites. Recent studies highlight Punarnavine’s potential immune-boosting and anti-metastatic effects in animal trials.
Doctor Recommendations for Boerhaavia Diffusa
Dr Kirti Vikram highlights Punarnava as highly effective for swelling (edema), asthma, high BP, liver cirrhosis, and jaundice. Also helpful in swelling from poisonous animal or insect bites.
Dr K S Gopi recommends Boerhaavia Diffusa Q for:
- Asthma with dry cough and thick white expectoration
- Right-sided bursting headaches, relieved by cold applications; often with giddiness
- Palpitations worse when alone; sleeplessness; heaviness of head; edema of face & legs — dose: 10 drops every 4 hours
- Jaundice with tenderness over liver, better from hard pressure; scanty dark urine with strangury
- Urinary retention and fluid accumulation

Heart: Palpitations, irregular heartbeats, fluttering, breathlessness, and exertional dyspnea.
Liver: Indicated for cirrhosis, hepatic tenderness, and jaundice, improving liver tone and function.
