It is cultivated in Eastern United States. A small, deciduous, perennial herb. Rhizomes brownish to yellowish with circular hollow stem scars; leaf bases or stem bases above; many tough, wiry, pale yellowish-grey to yellowish-brown, flexible roots below. Fracture short, yellow and mealy or slightly fibrous; pale yellow to moderately yellow internally; with scattered yellowish fibro-vascular bundles. Odour slightly acetous; taste starchy, sweetish and somewhat bitter.It contains steroidal saponins (like diosgenin), bitters, volatile oil and a resin.A homoeopathic tincture is made from the rhizome and root. It is covered by both: Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India and German Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia. It was introduced by Dr. Hale.This remedy portrayed an anaemic, relaxed condition, specially of the female organism. The patient is tried all the time, and suffers from prolapsus, leucorrhoea, rectal distress etc. Marked anaemia in chlorotic girls and in pregnant women. Its oestrogenic action is well proved. Useful for dysmenorrhoea, irregular threatened abortions, and menopausal problems.Q. 1x to third potency.Overdose may cause colic. Diarrhea and vomiting.Prolapsus, Leucorrhoea, Rectal Distress. Indications: Dysmenorrhoea : Premature and profuse menses, with labor-like pains. Retarded and scanty flow. Uterus seems heavy.
