The plant grows wild in the sub-Himalayan tract ascending to 1200cm and also in the Western Himalayas; Central and South India. In Hindi, it is known as Bel. A small or medium sized deciduous tree armed with straight sharp axillary throns which are 2.5cm long; leaves alternate, three foliolate, but sometime five foliolate, leaflets ovate lanceolate, entire or crenate.It contains alkaloids, coumarins, essential oils (alpha and beta-phellandrene).A homoeopathic tincture is made from the leaf. It is covered by Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India. It was introduced and proved by Dr. P.P. Biswas.It is knonw for its therapeutic value for bleeding piles; diarrhoea; dysentery; fever with dropsy and impotency.Q. 1x, 3x, and higher.It is made from tannic acid, which is also known as digallic acid.It is covered by Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India. Mother tincture contains 10% of the acid.Internally it is used with water for obstinate nervous cough, pain in abdomen with obstinate constipation and offensive of perspiration. It is also used locally against excessive secretion of mucous membranes, and as haemostatic in haematuria.
