Cascara sagrada MT has been used continually for at least 1,000 years by both native and immigrant Americans as a laxative natural medicine. In homeopathy, it is used for chronic indigestion, cirrhosis, and jaundice. It is also used for hemorrhoids and constipation; gastric headache; broad and flabby tongue and foul breath. According to J. Petersen, it is best to give it in small doses first and gradually increase it. When stool becomes normal continue the last dose for a week or so and then gradually decrease the dose and give at longer intervals. Given in this way it has proved to be a valuable remedy for chronic constipation, chronic indigestion, gastric or intestinal catarrh, and temporary constipation during pregnancy.
