Peritonitis is a serious condition characterized by inflammation of the peritoneum, which is the thin tissue lining the inner wall of the abdomen and covering the abdominal organs. It can be a life-threatening condition and requires immediate medical attention. Here are some important points about peritonitis:
Causes:
- Infection: Peritonitis is often caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. The infection can arise from various sources, such as a ruptured appendix, a perforated peptic ulcer, diverticulitis, or a burst abdominal abscess.
- Injury or trauma: Peritonitis can occur due to a penetrating injury to the abdomen, such as a knife wound or gunshot.
- Inflammatory bowel disease: Conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can increase the risk of developing peritonitis.
- Peritoneal dialysis: Individuals undergoing peritoneal dialysis may develop peritonitis if the catheter used for dialysis becomes infected.
Inflammation of the kidneys is commonly referred to as nephritis. There are several types of nephritis, each with its own causes and characteristics. Here are some important points about kidney inflammation:
-
Glomerulonephritis: Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the glomeruli, which are tiny filtering units in the kidneys. It can be caused by various factors, including infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain medications. Symptoms may include blood in the urine, foamy urine, swelling in the hands and feet, high blood pressure, and reduced urine output.
-
Pyelonephritis: Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of the kidneys, usually resulting from a urinary tract infection (UTI) that has spread upwards into the kidneys. Symptoms often include fever, chills, back or flank pain, frequent urination, and a strong urge to urinate.
-
Interstitial nephritis: Interstitial nephritis involves inflammation of the spaces between the kidney tubules. It can be caused by various factors, such as certain medications (e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics), infections, autoimmune diseases, or allergic reactions. Symptoms may include blood in the urine, increased or decreased urine output, fatigue, and fever.
-
Lupus nephritis: Lupus nephritis is inflammation of the kidneys that occurs as a complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease. It can cause damage to the kidneys, leading to proteinuria (excessive protein in the urine), high blood pressure, swelling in the legs and ankles, and decreased kidney function.
-
Chronic kidney disease (CKD): Chronic inflammation of the kidneys, often associated with conditions like diabetes or hypertension, can gradually lead to chronic kidney disease. CKD is a progressive condition in which the kidneys' function declines over time, impairing their ability to filter waste products from the blood and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance.
