It is large ornamental tree, 12 to 18 m high with many branches. It is native of Middle Asia, but flourishes well in temperate climate. Extensively cultivated as an ornamental tree in both Europe and America and in India. Bark smooth, white, wood not very firm. Leaves opposite, digitate, bright green; leaflets serrate, straight veined. Flowers appear in June on a terminal inflorescence, consisting of a panicle with the lower branches, shorter than the middle ones, often polygamous, the greater portion with imperfect flowers. The fruits is a nut, large ovoid, mahogany coloured, periodically smooth and shining with a large oval hilum which is pale in colour and rough.

It contains mainly aesculin, saponins, a falvone, escigenin, esculetin.

The action of this drug is most marked on the lower bowel, producing engorged haemorrhoidal venis, with characteristic backache, with absence of actual constipation. Much pain but little bleeding. It is also used in torpor and congestion of the liver and portal system, with constipation. It is fruit and barks are antiperiodic. The extract of the leaves is used in whooping cough. Research reports indicate its value in treatment of circulatory venous disturbances.
