The phytochemicals in flowers and leaves are hypericin and hyperforin. They are biologically active and are responsible for its effects and actions. Many studies prove that Hyperforin inhibits the synaptic reuptake of certain neurotransmitters like serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine, GABA.
