It is an Indian plant; commonly known as West-Indian Ipecacuanha. Its roots are similar to Iplecacuanha roots and are used as adulterant. The various parts of the plant and latex are used against warts and cancer. In Indian medicine, it is considered as emetic and cathartic. In Jamaica, the whole plant preparations is used in dysentery. Very well worked drug.Asclepin showed cardiotonic activity in a number of normal and hypodynamic in vitro and in vivo preparations in various animal species. It has marked positive inotropic effect of asclepin studied in vitro (isolated atrium and heart of guinea pig) and in vivo (anaesthetized cat) and compared with that of g-strophanthin, digoxin and digitoxegenin. The comparative safety margin and other data indicated that asclepin is a more potent, longer-acting and safer cardenolide than the other three substances.
