It is an Indian plant, generally found in the plains. In Hindi, it is known as Klamegh. An erect annual, upto 30 to 90 cm high, branches sharply 4 angled or almost winged. Leaves 6cm long, lanceolate, acute, tapering at the base, pale beneath, main towards lateral nerves 4 to 6 pairs, sessile, upto 0.6mm long. Flowers small, solitary, arranged in lax spreading axillary and terminal racemes or panicle, the pedicels distinct, gland pubescent; bracts 2.5mm long lanceolate; bracteoles smaller or none. Calyx 3mm long, segments equal linear lanceolate; corolla pink, 1 cm long, hairy outside, tube 5mm long, dilated below the limb. Filaments hairy upwards, rugose and glabrous.It contains kalmeghin, bitter andrographolide (1%).A homoeopathic tincture is made from the whole plant. An aromatic biennial herb growing upto 6ft with ridged upright hollow stems, large bright green leaves and greenish white flowers in umbels. Cultivated primarily as a spice.It contains beta-phellandrene, lactones and coumarins. Angelcin, beergapten, xanthotoxin.A homoeopathic tincture is made from the roots of the plant. It is covered by German Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia.It has also been used in bronchitis. In phyto-therapy the extract of the root has shown anti-inflammatory properties. Internally they use in colics, as warming tonic, to increase peripheral circulation in narrowing of arteries. The tea made from the rhizome is folk remedy for stomach cancer, It is useful for dyspepsia, enteritis, flatulence, gastritis, insomnia, meteorism, neuralgia, rheumatism and ulcers. It is also used for nervous headache, as diaphoretic and expectorant.In tincture five drops, three times daily, it produces disgust for liquor, also for atony of different organs, dyspepsia and nervous headache, in chronic bronchitis to increase expectoration (William Boericke).
