It is an Indian plant, found throughout the humid regions specially in the West coast forests. A tall evergreen tree with a straight, often fluted and buttressed stem, 13m high and up to 3m in girth. The bark occurs in channeled or occasionally quilled pieces up to about 3-4 mm thick from the branches, and cut or broken irregularly curved or flat pieces, up to 7 mm thick, from the stem. Externally, the younger bark is dark grey to brownish and the older bark is very rough, uneven and much fissured, both transversely and longitudinally, both are marked by numerous rounded or transversely elongated, grey to whitish-brown lenticles.It contains Indole alkaloids, echitenine, ditamine, triterpines.A homoeopathic tincture is made from the stem bark. It is covered by Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India.It is used in malarial diseases, with diarrhea, dysentery, anaemia, and feeble digestion. Characteristics are the gone sensation in stomach and sinking in abdomen, with debility. It is also used as tonic after exhausting fever. Its milky juice is applied locally to ulcers and rheumatic pains. Confirmed antipyretic, but action on malaria remains unexplained. Anticancer activity reported.Q. 1x to 3x.Some reports about its toxicity are available. Use under medical supervision.Malaria disease, diarrhea, dysentery, anaemia, and feeble digestion.
