Clematis Bach Flower Remedy: Materia Medica Overview

Dr. Bach identified several common symptoms in all Clematis types: a vacant, far-away look, indifference, inattentiveness, preoccupation, dreaminess, and often a marked pallor.

People with the Clematis temperament are daydreamers and absent-minded, living more in their thoughts than in their actions. They lack concentration and interest in the present, leading to a lukewarm approach to life. To avoid difficulties or unpleasantness, they let their attention wander and withdraw into a dream world. As one patient remarked, "I withdraw into a world of my own when there is anything unpleasant to face up to. I do it automatically now." They often show little interest in life and make minimal effort to recover when ill, sometimes because they wish to join a deceased loved one or because life does not meet their expectations. Edward Bach referred to this as a "polite form of suicide." They might prefer dying with a loved one over facing separation.

Unlike those with an Agrimony temperament, Clematis types do not seek company. They prefer being alone with their thoughts, the opposite of Vervain people, who are full of interest and enthusiasm. Clematis individuals are listless, apathetic, and inattentive, with poor memory due to a lack of effort in listening or remembering. They may appear absent-minded, even "cutting" you in the street because they are preoccupied with their own thoughts. This withdrawal of attention can affect their eyes and ears, leading to accidents due to inattention.

Clematis types need a lot of sleep, are difficult to rouse, enjoy dozing, and can fall asleep at any time. They might say, "I fall asleep while answering questions or talking and in church or at lectures." They are mediumistic, which, in its negative form, makes them impractical and easily influenced for ill. Fainting, faintness, giddiness, and unconsciousness indicate a temporary lack of interest in the present.

The Clematis state can occur in all of us at times when the mind is preoccupied with inner problems, joys, or worries, causing us to withdraw from the present. Clematis helps bring us "down to earth" once more.

The positive aspect of this remedy is seen in those who have a lively interest in all things and a sensitive mind receptive to inspiration. They are practical idealists, inspired statesmen, writers, artists, and healers who master their daily lives because they glimpse a great purpose behind them.

Case Example: Personal Transformation Through Clematis

Case: Mrs. Savlekar is gentle and quiet, and does not take enough interest in life or make any effort to do things. Prematurely old at 70, she seems to live in a dream. Her physical condition shows general weakness with difficulty in getting up from her chair and walking without help. She is constipated; her fingers are stiff and crooked.

Remedies prescribed: Clematis for the lack of interest and dreaminess and Hornbeam for her lack of effort and strength. Report after three weeks; improving and now able to walk about the house without help, even doing little jobs on her own, "She seems more cheerful." The same two remedies were repeated with the addition of Larch to give her more confidence in her ability to do things. Second report: "She has definitely improved both in mind and body and it is noticeable to all". The Remedies were repeated twice more, but then the patient moved to another district and failed to report.
