Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep or both" and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep.

The most common causes are stressful situations; changes in shift work; any psychiatric condition or withdrawal from drug, alcohol, sedatives.

• Ignatia amara: Jerking of limbs on going to sleep. Insomnia from grief, caer, with itching of arms and violent yawning.
• Passiflora in: Restless and wakeful, resulting from exhaustion.
• Valeriana off: Sleep with nightly itching and muscular spasms.
