Mimulus Bach Flower Remedy: Descriptive Materia Medica
The Mimulus fear is less acute than the terror of Rock Rose and differs from the Aspen fear of unknown origin, for the sufferer is afraid or nervous, for some known reason. Most of us have fear we would give much to lose but find it difficult to overcome. It may be fear of other people, animals or going upstairs in the dark, of illness and pain, damp sheets or wet feet. Some people fear heights, small enclosed places, poverty, growing old, death or inherited disease. We may be nervous of eating certain foods, of going to the dentist, of crossing the road or of walking down in the dark. These are all fears of known origin.
The Mimulus people are normally quiet and retiring and they hide their fears. They are tongue-tied, and the mouth may go dry when they try to speak, but on occasions, they talk quickly and much to cloak their nervousness. They are shy, blush easily and may stutter or stammer. When ill, they are afraid to move in case the pain returns and are afraid of growing worse of fear that they may not recover, or that they will lose their job. They are nervous about using an arm or leg after an injury and so may hinder recovery. These symptoms naturally vary in degree in different individuals.
The positive aspect of Mimulus is the quiet courage shown by those who face all the small difficulties and trials of daily life, the thought of illness and what the future may bring, with equanimity and humour. We fear only the things we dislike and hate, so that love, understanding, and courage are the great positive qualities of the Mimulus type.
Bach Flower, Cases treated:
Phillip, aged 8, had suffered since birth from itching eczema, especially on his knees. He suffered from shortness of breath, at times was pale, listless and dreamy, He was afraid to go to the cinema and afraid to have stories read to him in case they might turn out badly. He was also afraid to sleep by himself and never slept the night through. This patient was seen once only in January 1950. Mimulus was prescribed for the fears and Clematis for the dreaminess and listlessness. Four doses were given a day.
His mother wrote on February 3: "Phillip is a little better, the knees look more normal, but he still sleeps badly." The same remedies were repeated and the next report, at the end of March, was "Phillip is very much better in every way, sleeping right through the night he has never done this before in a room by himself." The two remedies were again given and the final report showed Phillip had maintained the improvement, was much more energetic, was sleeping well, had lost his fears and the physical complaint was cured completely.
