What is Jaborandi

It is a small branched shrubhaving a smooth grey bark spotted with white dots. It bears small flowers which are pinkish purple and in racemes. Fruit consists of 5 follices.

Indigenous plant of Brazil. Also called Pilocarpus it is native to central and south America and has had a long history as a medicinal plant in the rain forest herbal pharmacopeia .

It is also known by names like Jamgurandi, Arruda Bravam, Juarandi, Pilocarpus Jaborandi among others

Contra indications of Jaborandi

Both pilocarpine and jaborandi may cause irritation of the stomach, nausea, vomiting and headaches if consumed without proper guidance. In cases of overdose it is reported to cause symptoms such as increased pulse rate, sweating, flushing, diarrhea and contracted pupils. Cardiac patients or those with circulatory problems should not take jaborandi. Since jaborandi induces sweating and urination, it may cause dehydration.
