Beech Bach Flower Remedy: Descriptive Materia Medica
The intolerant people are those who do not try to understand or make allowances for the difficulties of other people; who tend to look only for faults, criticizing these instead of seeking the good qualities which are there deep within everyone. They lack humility, and the ability to put themselves in the same position as those they criticize, failing to realize that others may not have had the advantages; the help, the experiences that they have been privileged to have. Sometimes the small habits, characteristics, idiosyncrasies
of others try them beyond endurance, and annoy them out of all proportion to their importance. Then it is indeed a case of seeking the beam within one's own eye. This makes them rather lonely people and cuts them off from the friendly companionship of others.
The positive aspect is shown in the ability to understand and be lenient and tolerant at all times, but above all to recognize the greatness in others and by so doing strengthen
it and make it blossom. Dr. Bach himself had this great quality. He made you feel you were worth while, that you were of real importance in the scheme of things, and in consequence you were better able to perform your tasks, to be kinder, to be more joyous. In fact, as he wrote at the end of 'Heal Thyself' you felt you were part of the "Grand Design of being happy and communicate happiness".
Beech Bach Flower, Cases treated:
Case 1: Miss E.R. aged 66, had suffered from frequent and very severe bouts of migraine from the age of 10 years. They usually came on during sleep and she woke up feeling desperately ill, shivering and vomiting. At those times she was intolerant of light noise and east wind. She said they made her furious, which of course added to her sufferings. She had an unhappy childhood, she was suppressed by her parents who prevented her from doing the work she liked, but she said she was too proud to show her feelings. Now she sat in perpetual judgement upon everything and everyone. During her interview, because of her unhappiness, she was full of criticism of her present work, the people with whom she came into contact, and of the treatments she had for her headaches. She suffered from bouts of depression and felt that now at her age there was no hope of cure, although she wanted to have "one more try".
She said she had few friends, because, she supposed she criticized them so much. In January, 1954, Beech was given for the intolerant attitude of mind; intolerant of things, of people, of her work, of noise, light, and winds. Gorse for her feeling of hopelessness, and Gentian for her doubt that the Bach Remedies could help her. Two weeks later, she wrote and said, the headaches were "wonderfully better" but she lacked energy, feeling so tired all the time. On the other hand and to her great surprise, she was feeling more kindly disposed towards people. Beech, Gorse and Olive (Olive for the exhaustion and lack of energy) were given for a period of three months, with a gradual but steady improvement. At the end of this time, there was not only marked improvement in her physical health but she was making friends and feeling very much happier. She was given a stock bottle of these remedies to keep by her, in case of need.
