Wild Oat – “Decide Your Path” is aimed at treating feelings of dissatisfaction, indecision, and uncertainty about one's correct path in life. It encourages purposefulness and decisiveness. For humans, it's indicated when there's uncertainty about the correct path in life or when facing important decisions. For animals or pets, it addresses a loss of sense of direction or purpose, especially beneficial for retired pets who may seem to lack their previous sense of engagement or purpose.

About Bach Flower Remedy

Dr. Edward Bach, a British doctor and homeopath, believed that illnesses stem more from emotional discord than physical causes. He noted that emotional distress, such as fear, worry, and anxiety, weakens an individual's vitality and resistance to disease. From 1930 to 1936, Bach focused on finding gentle, natural remedies from the countryside's wild flowers. He identified 38 flower remedies with healing properties to help individuals regain strength by overcoming emotional distress like anxiety, fear, and depression, thereby aiding their natural healing process. Bach proposed that flowers and plants possess healing energies for emotional well-being.

Bach Flower Remedy Wild Oat: Descriptive Materia Medica

People who need this remedy are definite people with many talent but unable to decide how to use them or which, talents to follow. This delay in finding their work in life occupation to follow cause them to feel despondent and dissatisfied. They have many ambitions and a general idea, but not a clear one, of course they wish to pursue, so they feel life is passing by and they are wasting their time and opportunities. They try many things, none of which brings them satisfaction. They tend to drift into environments or occupations which are uncongenial and serve only to increase their unhappiness and sense of frustration.

One young man of 26 was intensely interested in human welfare and had a great love for nature and of animals, but he could not decide upon his career. He had many occupations after leaving school, including those of messenger-boy and junior salesman, and then joined the army but was discharged after a breakdown. Then he went into agriculture but disapprove of the methods used with animals. He became a ward orderly but was unhappy because the injections and medicines used were “all against nature.” He was by now very despondent and unhappy and felt he would never find his life’s true work. Wild Oat was given and gradually he came to the decision to start a small market-garden of his own. He is now happy and prosperous.

Another patient wrote: “I know I can do things well, but I do not know definitely what to do. For instance, I am in a business that makes me a good living, but I do not like it. I have been in five different kinds of business. I made money in all of them, but I never enjoy the work I do nor can I find any kind of business or occupation that I like. I am not lazy; I work long hours, often starting at 5 a.m. and, as I live alone, I keep the house clean as well. If I knew what occupation to follow, I know I could do it, but I do not. I work, but it gives me no satisfaction yet I cannot enjoy being lazy or doing nothing.”

The indecision and uncertainty of the Wild Oat type differs from the Scleranthus indecision. The Scleranthus people cannot decide between two definite things. “Shall I or shall I not?” The Wild Oat people have so many ideas and ambitions that they are indefinite and can come to no decision at all. There is an Irish saying which describes this state: “The Irishman does not know what he wants and won't be happy until he gets it.”

Dr Bach also says about this remedy and Holly: There are times when a patient appears to need a great number of remedies; all his difficulties seem to be outstanding and it is hard for the prescriber to decide which are the most urgently needed. Then it is that Wild Oat will be of great value for those who are despondent, undecided and tend to be too easily influenced by people and conditions, while Holly will help those of the active and intense type.

The positive aspect of Wild Oat is seen in those who have definite ambitions, know what they wish to do in life and do it allowing nothing to interfere with their purpose. They live life full of usefulness and happiness.

Bach Flower Wild Oat Case Treated:

Mrs. J. A., widow, aged 53, underwent an operation for removal of the gall-bladder six months back and now felt tired and despondent. Her chief trouble, as she said, was inability to decide what she wanted to do. She had many ambitions as a young woman but was achieving nothing. She was in charge of a grocery store and did her work with great efficiency but had lost interest in it. At the moment, she could not “be bothered” and was allowing others to make decisions for her, but this made her feel dissatisfied and unhappy.

Wild Oat was prescribed for the feeling of dissatisfaction and the lack of achievement, and Centaury for the temporary state of allowing others to influence her life. After taking the medicine, she wrote: “I was called upon to face quite a problem and I solved it in a much improved manner. Also, I have met a singing teacher and a painter, both out of the blue. I feel there is a purpose in this for I am most interested in painting and singing.”

Both remedies were repeated. The patient went on holidays a few days after beginning the medicine and forgot to take it with her. On her return she wrote and said she was finishing the bottle, but felt so much better and definite again.
